The Details Regarding Artificial Turf

By Essie Osborn

Nowadays, there is a special surface that can be installed and designed to appear like grass. Artificial turf, which may also be known as synthetic, is the term used to describe a product that is produced using synthetic fibers. Usually this is seen in sports arenas that require a grass field. It can be installed at residential properties or commercial buildings as it requires little to no maintenance.

There are many different types of this product that might be used. They will differ in installation method, color, size of blades of grass and maintenance requirements. Most are made to mimic a certain type of grass found in nature.

The surface is often applied because of its resistance to heavy use. Furthermore, it does not need irrigation systems or frequent trimming, which is often the case for real grass. Stadiums that have a dome roof or some other similar covering rely on this kind of turf because there is usually not enough consistent sunlight in order for grass to naturally grow all across a field. Synthetic turf became popularized during the second portion of the twentieth century, specifically following its use in the Astrodome design.

This type of surface is great for many different applications. Many times this is added to the yards of vacation homes because owners are not as available to maintain a real lawn and still want the property to remain aesthetically pleasing. Likewise, it might be used by homeowners who are immobile or elderly and struggle to maintain the landscaping of a property. This product might also be applied on rooftop gardens or around outdoor swimming pools.

There are disadvantages of using this kind of surface. Although it is known for its durability, this does have a limit to its life span. And while this does not require the maintenance generally expected of real grass, it still must be cleaned. Some of the types will require that infills, such as silicone sand or granulated rubber. These materials might leech into water tables.

Disinfection is key when it comes to this surface. The process should be done on a regular basis to guarantee that active pathogens are not present. When there has been friction between turf and skin, serious burns and abrasions can be the result. Additionally, this surface attracts more heat than normal grass when exposed to direct sun.

This might be installed by professionals or homeowners, when used for a personal property. In most cases, the product is laid down in squares or rows on a flattened surface. Weed barriers are usually used to keep weeds from growing around or under the surface. Typically the product is secured to the ground using landscaping nails every few feet. Prices and quality of this surface will vary considerably and depend on numerous factors.

May times this is seen in sports settings, particularly American football, tennis, American baseball and field hocked. It may also be found in certain sports around an airport. In the landscaping business, this is commonly employed because it is inexpensive and easy to maintain.
